Use Book Binding Services to Restore Old Books...

Binding techniques are used to repair damage to existing books. In book binding parlance these techniques are known as conservation and restoration. The conservation technique slows a book’s decay and restores it to a usable state and at the same time the original look and feel either left unaltered or is altered as little as possible. The restoration technique, on the other hand, is used to return the book to its perceived original state. Bookbinders need to ensure that the changes made to a book during the conservation and restoration processes can be undone if such a need arises in the future. Conservation treatment is used for a variety of books – from the earliest of texts to contemporary books that have undergone heavy usage. The treatment a conservator chooses depends on the book’s value. Restoration, on the other hand is used only for texts that are hundreds of years old. It uses a technique of hand binding with great care and finesse. Restoration also involves the removal of foxing, ink and other stains, page tears, dog ears etc. As it is necessary to preserve ancient texts which are often of great significance, book binding processes are used by a number of societies involved in the study and preservation of ancient texts. Conservation and restoration of books is especially relevant in the Indian context as ours is a land of rich and varied history – from the Indus Valley civilisation to the modern times and with a lot of history in between – with a large number of ancient texts that are extremely significant. India was the land where the concept of zero was invented. The land abounded with literary figures like Kalidasa and scientists like Aryabhatta. Unfortunately, some of the ancient texts are long lost. A lot of the texts that still remain are in a dilapidated state. Modern technology that is now available can be used to restore these texts. The organisations and societies – both government and non-government- involved in the study of ancient texts have been making some headway in the restoration of these texts. However, a lot more needs to be done. The binding companies in the organised sector can play a very useful role in this regard. In recent times we have seen the growth of such binding companies. One that readily comes...

Evolution of Modern Book Binding

Ever wondered how the book has become what it is and how it all began? How is it that the book you are holding is able to stay in one piece? Let’s talk about how the binding process evolved and some of the history associated with it. Some fifteen hundred years ago, books were bound between hard covers made mostly of leather.  Back then, books were handwritten and standards were non-existent.  The British Library houses the earliest surviving European bookbinding. Rag paper manufacturing in Europe first started in the late middle ages and as the use of the printing press commenced in the 15th century, bookbinding standards began to evolve. Paperback covers also started to emerge during this period. Modern book binding, as we know it today, was developed during the latter part of the 19th Century and the early 20th Century. During this period, binding automation took several leaps forward. In 1868, binding machines were developed for gluing, trimming, case-making and casing-in. Many of the machines developed during this period are still in use. The technique of “perfect binding” was invented in 1895, but was sparingly used until 1931, when the German publisher, Albatross Books, introduced the first paperback books. Paperback versions started becoming popular and soon everybody was reading paperback books. In the 1940s the DuPont Company developed a new adhesive binding technique, which improved the binding process and resulted in more durable and longer lasting books. Like in most other spheres of life, the post World War II period witnessed an increased demand for book binding. The 1950s saw a dramatic increase in the need for office documentation. The book binders responded to this need with several new binding innovations which included plastic comb binding and Velobinding. These innovations used the process of punching the sheets and loading them into the binding element. With the introduction of desktop publishing, binding techniques were also modified accordingly and on-demand paperback and hardback book binding was made available to the public. In India, organised businesses have recently moved into the business of book binding. Reputed companies dedicated to book binding include BindingServices.in. Along with book binding, the company also provides trainings for aspiring technicians. These companies have embraced the changing technologies in the book binding industry and use the best equipment available to provide high quality services to their...

Book Binding Methods

Books and documents binding is an essential aspect of making them look professional and keeping them in good condition. Several book binding methods are available in market today and the method of binding should be chosen depending on certain factors listed below. Whether the book or the documents are going to be used for several years. In that case the book cover should be very durable and long lasting. Overall weight of the book. If the book is to be carried everyday to school or college, the weight of binding cover should be kept low.  Count of pages. Thickness of paper. Budget. Depending on above factors, an apt binding method can be chosen. Few of the binding methods are listed below.  Saddle Stitching – It is the most common method used for binding books and documents which have less than 100 pages. All the pages are held together with staples with long jaws. Most of the magazines, brochures and kid’s rhymes books are bound using the saddle stitching method. Also, this method is the most economical as compared to other binding methods.  Perfect Binding – It is the easiest and least durable form of binding. In this method all the pages are stacked together and their spine is glued with an adhesive. After that a pre-folded cover is attached on the book. Books such as telephone directories that are several inches thick can be bound using this method. Also, cost is higher as compared to saddle stitching.  GBC Binding – GBC or Plastic comb binding is more suitable to publications which are several inches thick.  It can be used with publications having around 500 pages. With this binding, the major advantage is pages can be laid flat at 360 degrees allowing for better reading and photocopying. Pages can also be easily added and removed as per the requirement.  Spiral Binding –In spiral binding, small holes are punched along the spine of the book and then a spiral piece of plastic wire is twisted through them to bind the book. Also known as coil binding, spiral binding can be used with any number of pages and it also allows you to lay the book flat at 360 degrees.  Double-O-Wire Binding – This method offers more durability than the simple spiral binding. Also, it gives a more hi-tech look to the...
