Books and documents binding is an essential aspect of making them look professional and keeping them in good condition. Several book binding methods are available in market today and the method of binding should be chosen depending on certain factors listed below.
- Whether the book or the documents are going to be used for several years. In that case the book cover should be very durable and long lasting.
- Overall weight of the book. If the book is to be carried everyday to school or college, the weight of binding cover should be kept low.
- Count of pages.
- Thickness of paper.
- Budget.
Depending on above factors, an apt binding method can be chosen. Few of the binding methods are listed below.
- Saddle Stitching – It is the most common method used for binding books and documents which have less than 100 pages. All the pages are held together with staples with long jaws. Most of the magazines, brochures and kid’s rhymes books are bound using the saddle stitching method. Also, this method is the most economical as compared to other binding methods.
- Perfect Binding – It is the easiest and least durable form of binding. In this method all the pages are stacked together and their spine is glued with an adhesive. After that a pre-folded cover is attached on the book. Books such as telephone directories that are several inches thick can be bound using this method. Also, cost is higher as compared to saddle stitching.
- GBC Binding – GBC or Plastic comb binding is more suitable to publications which are several inches thick. It can be used with publications having around 500 pages. With this binding, the major advantage is pages can be laid flat at 360 degrees allowing for better reading and photocopying. Pages can also be easily added and removed as per the requirement.
- Spiral Binding –In spiral binding, small holes are punched along the spine of the book and then a spiral piece of plastic wire is twisted through them to bind the book. Also known as coil binding, spiral binding can be used with any number of pages and it also allows you to lay the book flat at 360 degrees.
- Double-O-Wire Binding – This method offers more durability than the simple spiral binding. Also, it gives a more hi-tech look to the bound documents.
